The Sleeping Giants
element arts invited Ryan Kai Orme to create an enormous peice of painted art on a monumental stack of William’s containers to be placed at the heart of TRANSPORTED in the centre of Guildhall Square.
Ryan is a painter and sculptor from Southampton who is now based in London. His art practice is influenced by his longstanding involvement in the graffiti movement and he has been part of many projects, exhibitions, books and publications that document it’s history.
Ryan says : “Inspired by the alters, totems and monumental structures of bygone civilisations, this temporary structure attempts to place our times within a greater narrative of mans history. Much can be learnt from the relics we leave behind; what we believe in, how we see the world, what we hold most dear. With this in mind, I feel like the shipping container is a fitting symbol for a monument of our times.”
Below are some photos of the creation of The Sleeping Giants from initial sketches to the work installed in the square and the public interacting with it. We also have a short video of the Giants being hoisted onto their ‘plinths’.
