Southampton has celebrated Black History Month in October over a number of years and its impact and influence has increased over the years. Education is an essential part of the work and schools, colleges and universities always play a significant role. It is now a matter of record that black people have made a significant contribution to the history of the world, the United Kingdom and indeed the history of Southampton; and not just in the context of the slave trade but as scholars, scientists and inventors.
This presentation is drawn from exhibitions and displays shown in the city over the last nine years and gives a flavour of the part played by Black people in the city over the past 500 years. More detail on the black presence in the city can be found in the publication: “A Black History of Southampton” by Don John & Stella Ryan Muirhead Photography
